Sunday April 24 2021 at Gateway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida   Leave a comment

Another day in South Florida–today’s temp is 92 but it will ‘cool’ off starting tomorrow!

If you look at the second picture down on the left you will see the first Queen Crepe Myrtle tree in bloom kicking off the season and though we have very few left they will all be in bloom soon–the only color in Gateway since the new owners took over and took out all the flowering plants, bushes and trees.

The third picture from the left in the second row is Lucy, my neighbor, always looking out for us.

Whether it is spotting canoes through the trees from my apartment window (third picture from the left, second row) or one of the many million-dollar homes across the canal (top row, far right) or people in yachts, motorboats, being dragged over the water and, of course, eventually falling in or just enjoying looking over The Point no matter what is going on in the world it is peaceful here.

1) “Thunder Force”–Netflix–film–1 hour & 45 minutes–I did laugh twice once being in the new car scene–superhero comedy movie–Bateman almost saves the movie but can’t–NEITHER A GOOD SUPERHERO OR COMEDY FILM!

2) “Hysterical”–Hulu–documentary–1 hour & 28 minutes–I will probably be bashed for saying this but I agree with Jerry Lewis’s statement about female comics–how do you make a show about female comics and not mention Carol Burnett?–NOT A LAUGH!

3) “Amazing Grace”–Netflix–documentary–1 hour & 29 minutes–I’ve never been that much into gospel just like I have never been  too much into country music but with a voice like Aretha Franklin’s YOU SIT UP AND TAKE NOTICE!

4) “The Keepers”–Netflix–documentary–7 episodes–7 hours & 15 minutes–Sadly an often told story about children being abused in church–this is a case of 2 nuns being killed for what they may have known–now adults face the aftermath–EPISODE 7 IS A MUST SEE!

5) “A Week Away”–Netflix–original Christian musical–1 hour & 37 minutes–I love musicals but this one has too many songs in the wrong places–MISGUIDED MUSICAL CHRISTIAN OR OTHERWISE!

6) “Dolly Parton: A Musiccares Tribute”–documentary–55 minutes–I didn’t know half of the singers but DOLLY’S SONGS STAND OUT–WHAT A WOMAN!

7) “Portrait of a Lady On Fire”–Hulu–French Film–2 hours–slow-moving which it should be and beautifully photographed–EVEN MEN WILL GET AN UNDERSTANDING OF ‘SISTERHOOD’–A LOVE STORY AS ONLY THE FRENCH CAN TELL

If it wasn’t for the birds–and the water!–one would never know it has been a rainy day in Fort Lauderdale today.

My “Holiday Cactus” has decided the last 2 weeks of April are a holiday and started to come into full bloom this week from the mother plant to the ‘babies’–then again maybe it is getting ready to be in full bloom for Mother’s Day May 9–will have to take pictures of that day!

The calendar for the week is showing warm temperatures and chances of rain every day but they usually don’t interfere with the afternoons on the beach.

Of course, the rain doesn’t stop the bathing suit-clad boaters from passing by my window on the canal! Can’t tell if that is a dog or a monkey on the blue boat!

The only negative note was my doctor had given me a med–sulfamethoxazole–that really knocked me on my butt for 5 days. He changed it today to Minocycline which is not as powerful and though it may not work as fast, I feel, on the whole, a lot better.

Seems the infection I have–Nocardiosis–is VERY rare!–caused by plant/dirt/dust!

A Day of winter and then summer hits!   Leave a comment

#s 1 & 6) Except for a couple of Spring-like days (temperatures under 90 degrees) we seem to have gone from late Fall to summer while the calendar has March 20 as the first day of Spring!

Whatever the season the birds know to come to the mall for a ‘snack  #2) under the right chair near the leg and #3 on the AC looking to see what there is to eat!

#4 & 5)  The Holiday plant has decided to bloom–maybe for Earth Day–who cares? The blooms are always welcome!

#7)  A stop at Big Louie’s for spaghetti and meatballs plus garlic-loaded hot rolls for lunch.

LIFE IS GOOD!

Mother Nature’s Revenge??? NOCARDIOSIS!!!   1 comment

I don’t know how, why, when, what or if anything particular made me fall in love with Mother Nature but I remember being entranced by no matter what she presented me with whether it was New York snowstorms, Florida’s hurricanes, California earthquakes, Tennessee tornadoes or roses in our Bronx front yard blooming or the white peonies in Lake Hiawatha spreading their perfume over Nokomis Avenue.

I still remember my first trip to Miami, getting off the train and being greeted by rows and rows of Birds of Paradise!Over the years I have had dogs starting with Butch in Pelham Parkway to having 50-gallon saltwater fish tanks in my Memphis office and  25 gallon freshwater fish tanks to at one time having 23 birds—budgies, cockatiels and finches (no one told me they were ‘worse’ than rabbits when it came to breeding!) who had free reign of my apartment.

Maybe it was after years of smoking 2-3 packs of cigarettes a day for 30 years but all of a sudden I couldn’t have dogs because their hair affected my breathing just as I had to get rid of my 23 birds because of their dander. Without any pets around I started my indoor gardens growing flowers, vegetables and enjoying each bloom. The pictures above I took 2 days ago with peppers growing, geraniums blooming and the ‘holiday’ cactus (upper right) blooming for Ramadam!!!

Long story short–I have had breathing problems for the past 6 months and, yesterday, finally, I was diagnosed with Nocardiosis which is caused by dirt, soil, earth dust–if you want to gain some knowledge just download google and/or Wikipedia–this is just a couple of lines from the latter: ” The Nocardia bacteria are found in soil around the world. People contract this disease by either inhaling contaminated dust or if soil containing Nocardia bacteria gets into an open wound.[” Without pointing fingers, I have been using bags of soil from the same company for decades and I just hope that wasn’t the cause of it.

I am starting to take 6 tablets a day–and they are horse-size tablets–of Sulfamethoxazole and may have to take them for 6 months to a year if not longer and first have to see if they will even work!
Do I have to get rid of the plants? I think I know the answer to that but don’t want to ask my doctor—yet!

Okay, Mother Nature what did I do to you? I’ve always praised you, posted pictures of you in all your glory, told people that no way could they be bored with all the pictures you made every day of the year–why after taking my dogs, birds, fish from you are you taking my plants?!?!?  WHY???

April 2021 at Gateway in Fort Lauderdale   1 comment

I once figured out that before I moved here to Gateway in 1999 I never lived in one place for more than 5 years except, possibly, in my younger years though I remember we lived in 3 different places the first 16 years of my life.

When I first moved here I lived in the F building for 5 years and then in February 2004 I moved into this apartment and I have been here going on 18 years.

I could sit here looking out my windows (#s 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11) facing east, south and north with the scene constantly changing with yachts, catamarans, canoes, jet skis, kyaks not to forget Mother Nature doing her job for life.

Right now she is sprinkling those April showers that bring May flowers but if you look at picture #1 the week will be providing sunny, warm afternoons and cool (low 70s are cool in South Florida!) evenings.

Okay, once in a while you have to get out which is what the JMarks restaurant sign (# 7) is all about as we went for lunch on Thursday. I usually have their steak but because of teeth problems–let’s NOT go there!–I decided on a dish I haven’t had in a long time which is Mussels on Linguini. It was good but I would have preferred it being made in a  garlic and white wine sauce.

Mother Nature, food and me–no complaints from Gateway in Fort Lauderdale!

1) “Nina”–Hulu–documentary–1 hour & 30 minutes–Nina Simone  is always in my list of top singers not only for her dynamite voice and piano playing but for who she was–this is only one look at this phenomenal human being!

2) “American Murder: The Family Next Door”–Netflix–Documentary–1 hour & 23 minutes–unlike most documentaries this is short, to the point and the way we live our life on social media–It says a lot about 21st century living.

3) “Honest Thief”–Prime Amazon–movie–1 hour & 39 minutes–it’s Liam Neeson–it’s a crime thriller–it has a good twist–it delivers and is over–like Neeson? You’ll like “Honest Thief”.

4) “Ammonite”–Prime Amazon–movie–2 hours–An exquisite love story with 2 very strong performances that, if we didn’t have an epidemic, their accolades would put all other performances to shame–A MUST SEE!

5) “Mapplethorpe”–Hulu–movie–1 hour & 35 minutes–Mapplethorpe–was an artist who shocked not only the art world but the whole world–is not served well in this movie of his life!

6) “Collateral”–Netflix–mystery series–4 episodes–3 hours & 52 minutes–it is a good thing I like  Carey Mulligan because she is everywhere these days and is a contender for all the major awards for her performance in “Promising Young Woman” including an Oscar–this series gives you a feel of the actress and what she can do–it is okay except way too many storylines with many questions answered–hope there is a season 2!

April comes in like a lamb!   1 comment

1) Except for falling and hitting my head April has come to Fort Lauderdale but looking back over the years April hasn’t always been a good month for me–in 2016 I had to have a finger cut off!!!

2) We had a catamaran named Semper Fi visit and every Marine at Gateway had to stop by and say hello!

3) When people ask me how can I afford to eat out, go to the theatre, the movies, etc., all I have to do is show them this BUT sometimes it is just better to have a car like having to go to the doctor 10 out of 14 days but that is a whole other story!

4 & 7) Say hello to my 2 calendar dogs and, in #5) a beautiful heron stopped by to say hi!

6) Couldn’t ask for better weather the first week of April–now we have to hope April remains a lamb!

And on the 7th day of April I got my stimulus money!
