New Computer   1 comment

Computer new and old

I learned the hard way! Opened a Pay Pal email as I was expecting a payment from one of my sites–not much–only about $6—and that is the only time I use that site! I failed to notice it was addressed to Dear Customer instead of my by name and the computer died on me!!
Spent all week pricing computer desk tops and finally found one for $400+ at Best Buy where I can charge it for 12 payments without any interest and ‘bought’ it.
Before I bought it I had a computer guy who I know through another resident here and he came over looked at my old one and said MS 10 was DEAD! He tried a few virus programs and other things but he couldn’t get it going. He did say he could uninstall Windows 10 and reinstall it but couldn’t guarantee it would work so off I went to get the new desk top tower It is the second picture–wider, shorter and much lighter than the one I had but still needs a few millions wires–ARGH!
In any case I spent the weekend getting familiar with the new one, resetting this and that plus it seems Microsoft is sort of blackmailing their customers–you no longer can use Word/Office 2007 or anything else but their NEW software, costing a minimum of $8.75 A MONTH which means there goes the over 500 documents I saved but, unknowingly, I had saved most of  them in/on 2 NON-Microsoft
Oh well an expensive lesson to learn but from now on I will certainly be sure my email is safe before I open it and most businesses will be deleted!
Okay, I have to go and rearrange my computer corner and those wires!!

Catching up little by little   Leave a comment

8 days without the Internet means I have a lot of catching up to do. I am overwhelmed with all the notifications I have from blogging sites and emails plus posting my ‘diary notes’. As most of you know I have kept diaries for over 70 years having many lined notebooks of all sizes and shapes.

In 199? (What year was it Chuck?) Chuck introduced me to computers and started writing my diary notes and saving them here which saves a heck of a lot of room! In any case I am going to condense the notes and go from there. Aside from restaurant and movie review while I was on ‘vacation’ Gateway put in a ‘new’ bathtub in my apartment and in the process burned my shower curtain and liner!

Not having the Internet I found myself going back to reading books! I forgot how much I enjoyed doing that! I also did something I always dread–cleaning! I went through 14 draws throwing out ‘stuff’ and rearranged my linen closet, cleaned off, and out, my desk though back on the Internet for 12 hours you would never know that by all the ‘notes’ I now have on it.

I, also, have a backlog of posts I was saving for future postings and now some are already out of date. I started to work on adding captions to the slide shows I make at youtube, actually putting what I want to say on the particular photo. I want to post the one I did about the 20 touring Broadway shows coming here to see what you think and offer any suggestions. (That will be on my songanddanceman page.)

In conjunction with “Something Rotten” coming I am going to experiment with running a contest which will be fun for theatre geeks though whenever they have that topic on Jeopardy most don’t get it right. (I’ll give you a little head start and practice here at the end.)

The one benefit I did get from not being able to get on the Internet was that I learned how to use the phone in ways besides taking and making calls–that doesn’t mean I like it or will do it again if I don’t have to but I’ll write about that on another post!

How many musical references can you catch? Hint: here are a few to start–Annie, South Pacific, Evita, Guys & Dolls, Sweet Charity, A Chorus Line. There are over 30!

A vacation from the Internet–not voluntary   Leave a comment

On Friday morning, March 3, 2017, I wanted to get on the Internet for my email and couldn’t! I called AT&T and after 2 hours and 10 minutes I found out something was wrong–DUH! Of the 30 people who live here at least 10 were without the Internet and we immediately knew what was wrong–the lawn maintenance people had cut a wire. It took AT&T 4 days to come to the same conclusion  and then 4 days to fix the wire.

I won’t get into the many HOURS I was on the phone those 8 days repeating the same thing to an unaccountable amount of people. Adding insult to injury I was disconnected 4 times–yes, 4 times–from the automated ‘man’ who understands full sentences.

I spent a minimum of 4 hours every day waiting for a technician to come to my place to only tell me it is not my problem but on the outside–by the 3rd day, including last night, before the technician opened his mouth to say hello I answered by telling him exactly what he would find and yes that is what he found and smiling, repeated my words.

I was promised by one on Wednesday that it would be fixed by that night or the next morning and on Thursday the technician of the day (I got to meet all 8 of the team here) said that they had it fixed but since it was so late it wouldn’t be til tomorrow morning (today) and guess what? Yes 8 days later I tried to get to my email but the Internet connection wasn’t working!!

It is beyond my comprehension how such a large company like AT&T is so messed up! Each day it was like the whole problem was new. While everything was, supposedly, on my report of calls and what was or wasn’t accomplished it was as if Susan didn’t talk to Eric or anyone else talked to anyone else. Each time I called it was as if it was a new problem and , remember, there were 9 others calling from the complex with the same problem!

I did have one funny conversation with Randy who was on the esculation team. When he answered the phone (after I waited 22 minutes and was cut off by the automatic system!) I explained this was not aimed at him and I was apologizing before I started my rant.He immediately responded that he couldn’t do anything but that I should go ahead and I did. He was/is the top man in his department and he said there really was no one higher on the ladder that he could refer me to because all used that automatic system in order to talk to anyone. While I am not saying that Randy was wrong or rude–he certainly was not the latter as I can say about everyone I spoke to though too many read from a script and will not stop talking to hear what you say and/or want until they have finished that particular part of the script.

I am not stopping there and will eventually get to the head of the Internet department of AT&T while meanwhile though I haven’t heard much better reports about Comcast and other Internet suppliers I certainly wouldn’t recommend AT&T even though I get a great rate.

I have a lot more to say about this all but I do have a lot of catching up to do. It is surprising how dependent you can become to a ‘thing like the Internet, a television set, the phone, etc. (And how I learned to hate ‘typing’ on a phone and now admire those who do!)
