CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK PART 2   Leave a comment

Herb and I did all the New York things
that tourists do. We walked down 5th Avenue stopping to look at Tiffany’s windows and then went to see the Saks-5th Avenue, Lord and Taylor’s windows eventually walking down to Macy’s just looking in the windows. (57th Street to 34th Street? OMG! 23 blocks there and 23 blocks back. No way could I do that today!)

Over the next few days we walked to Times Square where I showed him the Lyric movie theatre I had worked as a teenager and then to Greenwich Village my showing him where I use to spend my time in the baths, the bars of which many were not that anymore, the restaurants I worked in and the ones I loved to eat in. We stopped at The Stage Deli and he couldn’t believe the size of the ‘Hymie’s Special’ sandwich. One night we ate in my favorite restaurant in the world Marchi’s. We took a Circle boat tour around Manhattan that I had never done before and it was magic.

Christmas Eve we went to St. Patrick’s cathedral for midnight mass and I told him about doing the same as a teenager and how taken I was by the pageantry and choir and the ‘theatrics’ of the mass. I told him about Cardinal Spellman who had been a powerful political figure and was known to cruise Rockefeller Center downstairs bathroom. I think it was the next day that we went to see the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show with the Rockettes. I know we went to see a Broadway show but for the life of me I don’t remember which one.

And then the magic started–the snow came. It wasn’t a blizzard but enough to make the city romantic. We took a carriage ride in Central Park and we walked up Central Park West and I showed him where I had lived on 75th Street. We even walked arm in arm and though the ‘gay revolution’ had taken place that still wasn’t a smart, safe thing to do but we both felt invisible.

Of all we did the most magical part is something you have seen in movie after movie but we did it. We ice skated in the Rockefeller rink, my falling on my butt a few times and we had a hot chocolate and walked around looking at the lights and decorations.

I can see us walking up the path between the rink and 5th Avenue enjoying the snow and each other. I can see him dressed in his Christmas sweater that he bought at Macy’s and his black trousers and jacket–I can see it all this 40 years later but I don’t remember his name. I wasn’t taking pictures back then but I have a feeling I do have a picture from that time and I am going to search for it. I might be lucky and see that I had put his name on the back of the photo.

Did he leave New York first or did I? Was that when I had to get back to Memphis because Bernie was up to something? I don’t remember nor do I remember when we left and went on our own way never to see each other or talk to each other again.
I hope he has/had a good life.

If you haven’t done it put ‘visit New York City the last two weeks of the year’ on your bucket list. With or without snow it is a must see/must do beautiful and, yes, a magical time felt no where else.

SCENES FROM THE FORT LAUDERDALE GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL   Leave a comment

This weekend Fort Lauderdale celebrated its 35th Gay Pride Festival at, in and around the War Memorial auditorium–these are just some of the pictures.

No, no, that’s not me–besides you are suppose to be looking at the car!!

This is in front of the auditorium saluting men who served in WW2 many who were gay and are heroes as are those who are named on the AIDS

Memorial Quilt saluting those who have died in that ongoing war.

Inside the auditorium

Outside the auditorium

What’s a Gay Pride Festival without bears, skimpy swim suits, impressive backs and drag queens?  They were all here.

Someday I will have to write a blog about this kid who left a $5 tip on a $120 haircut and adding insult he worked for tips as a stripper/dancer!!!

A cowboy, a horse and food courts–what more do you want?

A perfect day with perfect weather–sun, blue skies, warm temperatures with a breeze and happy people all around–booths of every kind from arts and crafts to politicians running for election, pet adoptations, help for abused children not to forget so many happy gay parents with their happy children in strollers walking around, showing off, adding joy to a well deserved show of Gay People.

Ooops! How did that car picture get in there again???

See you there next year!

THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY–FEBRUARY 29, 2012—LAST DINNER?   Leave a comment

ROBERT AND ALLEN

One of the last birthday meals I had was at “The Cheesecake Factory” on THE 29th of February before going to see “Billy Elliot”. Of all the chain restaurants this is my favorite. They serve good food in large portions at reasonable prices and the staff from the desk on  are always smiling. They change the menu often enough to keep it interesting by adding new items and deleting others. Here are just a couple of pictures I took that evening before we were off to the theatre.

This is Zack our waiter who had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned “A Chorus Line” and/or the role of the director being called Zack. Actually he knew very little about theatre! (I still tipped him.)

Allen had the shrimp scampi over linguine while Robert had the fried shrimp.

It may be hard to believe but I started my diet by having a plain turkey sandwich with a side of broccoli. Okay, let’s not talk about the cheesecake. Then again how can I talk about The Cheesecake Factory without talking about the cheesecake? Come on, it was my birthday!

Robert was a good boy and didn’t have dessert but then again he had fried shrimp and fried potatoes. Allen had the upside down pineapple cheesecake.

I had the Godiva cheesecake–that’s a square of Godiva chocolate leaning against the whipped cream on top. Little did I know Maria’s ‘the best carrot cake’ was waiting for me at home or that Tim would send me a gift card for The Cheesecake Factory. Both are now waiting for me as I am on my diet and both are my motivation to lose the weight I want to lose!! Lost 3 and 3/4s the first week–it’s turkey, fish, vegetables and no sweets until I reach my goal and I will. The carrot cake and The Cheesecake Factory await me.

THE END????? IS IT OVER???? 4 MORE YEARS??????????   Leave a comment

My birthday may finally be over–I didn’t get a card from the NC lady today and we ate cheap and I had a chance to inhale–back to schedule tomorrow???

At 3 PM we sat in front of my computer monitor and watched the “Revenge” episode we missed on Wednesday, February 29–wonder why.

At 4:30 PM we were sitting at The Gateway Theatre watching the foreign film Oscar winner, “Separation”–will post my review soon.

No more $200 dinners–or even $50 dinners–back to ‘save  money plus get back on the diet dinners so at 6:45 PM we were having a turkey sandwich at Subways.

At 8:03 PM the curtain went up at the Parker Playhouse and there was Kathleen Turner, with that distinctive voice, starting the play “High”. Once again the review coming up.

One jarring note–scrapped my arm and with taking blood thinners the ‘wound’ looks ugly and will take a long time to heal–and I’ve been wearing long sleeved shirts and a sports coat!

With the month long ‘party’ finally over I’ll spend this weekend getting caught up and leave you with these card, of the many I got that gives me excuses for being me.

JUST WHEN I (WE, US) THOU…   Leave a comment

JUST WHEN I (WE, US) THOUGHT IT WAS ALL OVER… LOL

With the thought that after seeing “Billy Elliot–the Musical” the mad rush, the non-stop running around, that another Leap Year birthday would come to an end and I would have 4 years to recover and get ready for the one in 1216 when I would finally reach 20 I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it wasn’t finished yet!

I had mentioned–a few times–who ever said I was subtle?–that I would like to see Kathleen Turner at the Parker Playhouse in the play “High”.  Over Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory Allen handed me 2 tickets to the show for Friday night. (Guess I’ll have to take him! LOL)

When I got home, after “Billy Elliot”, I found a big box marked “WORLD’S BEST CARROT CAKE” on my doorstep and today more birthday cards, deviled eggs made for me by Poochie and gifts from Bill and Laura. Will this being going on until February 29, 2016?

******************************************************************

I must admit that getting old is not easy nor is it a ‘state of mind’ or ‘just a number’–it is exhausting!!!! Tomorrow my 19th birthday will officially be over but before that it will be a “ARTS EVENING” starting with watching the episode of “Revenge” we missed last night–hey, I am the birthday boy and I like the show.

Then we will be going to see the Oscar winner of best foreign film “Separation” and after that “High”.

By the way if anyone is interested I did get back on my diet this morning.

******************************************************************

I do apologize to everyone for getting behind in responses but then I have gotten behind in paying bills, among other things. I plan to do all my catching up this weekend, including sleep!

ONE MORE DAY TO GO AND THEN—   Leave a comment

What’s a birthday without an ice cream corn?

This afternoon we are going to see “My Week With Marilyn”–review to follow someday this week and then restaurant number 17 of the 19 on my hit list–and you know I will be posting reviews of them. I must admit ‘sticker shock’ at the high prices in all the restaurants–and they will be going higher.

This evening it will Texas de Brazil, an Argentine restaurant, which means a lot of eating–like it wouldn’t otherwise. LOL

By the way for those who didn’t think I would do it–and would eat all the cookies by myself–I did take a BIG plate of cookies down to the breezeway yesterday to share with the meeting of the mindless folks!

While the Leap Year Cactus didn’t get 19 blooms it was like icing on the cake blooming this month. I have been overwhelmed by the cards, gifts and good wishes I have gotten–so far! Will definitely share–pictures of them that is–in the coming week.

February 29th is special…

It’s the reason that a season comes at the same time every year.

If you’re born on Leap Day… Welcome Home!

Just 1 day to our next birthday!
