SUMMERTIME 2015 PART 4   Leave a comment

(WILD PARROTS)

There is no doubting that August in Fort Lauderdale is HOT! HOT! HOT! And let’s not forget the humidity but I love it all. I especially love walking around and just enjoying all that is around me whichever way I turn.

1 & 2 Some residents make gardens out of the property in front of their apartments while others make patios and this is just two of them–all paid for and made by the residents!

3 Say hello to Lenny the Lizard–he (or is it his brother?) greet me every day near the elevator when I reach the ground floor.

4 & 5 Here it is 6 months after I bought the seeds from The Dollar Tree and planted them still blooming and still putting a smile on my face!

6 The hibiscus that was trained into a tree–stunning.

7 to 9 We have a flock of wild parrots that visit every day. Yes they are loud but look at their colors! It always amazes me that they can perch on branches or twigs without bending them a bit and these are heavy birds!

10 One of the old trees in the park near the football filed.

11. Lenny’s friend–do you know HIS name???

AND IN A FEW WEEKS AUTUMN WILL COME AND OUR HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL DROP TO THE MID 80S {#basic-frown.gif}

KAREN BAY AT GATEWAY–PART 2–DOGS AND BOATS   1 comment

Last month I wrote about Karen Bay which is at the east end of the Gateway Terrace apartments I live at. There is always something going on the water whether it is boats coming and going or people water skiing, kayaking, canoeing, riding on paddleboards or going up in the sky with water jet packs.

In the late afternoon and early evening the dogs of Gateway come to The Point, bringing their owners–well, slaves–with them and it is fun watching them interact. In fourth picture you will see sister and brother Kiki and Meatball while in the fifth picture Meatball is giving the old gal Biscuit some sugar. Sometimes she will tolerate the kids but at other times you can see she doesn’t want to be bothered but she lets them have their fun. In the sixth picture, on the left, you will see the small black and white dog who belongs to my neighbor (or they belong to her!)

It is as relaxing a time for the dogs as it is for the residents who come and talk about their day and, yes, gossip! The all white dog belongs to one of the people who have their boat docked here.

I will come down around midnight when it is one of the most peaceful places in the world and even though the ‘big city’ is 5-6 blocks away you don’t see it or hear it. It is me, the moon, the stars, a cloud drifting by and a boat going by–the end to another perfect day!

Sadly, since I wrote this Meatball’s, owner Irene passed away.

THE POINT GOES TO THE DOGS!   2 comments

Someday I will figure out how to have a clear narrative without it sounding like a hurricane is taking place when I make a video!

In any case it being the day after Good Friday and the first evening of Passover and a day before Easter Sunday the Gateway Resident group had a Hot Dog day with real dogs invited!

Being Passover they also had matzos available for those who didn’t eat bread. I counted about 23 people (plus a couple ‘carried out’) and about 6 dogs. There was all the condiments you could want and chips.

It was a beautiful day, sunny, with temperatures in the low 80s, a breeze off Karen Bay. It did surprise me that there weren’t any boats out on the water or paddle boards riders.

Any wonder I keep on raving about where I live at Gateway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida??

WHERE THE BOYS ARE–STILL   3 comments

(YEAH THAT WAS ME BACK IN THE 1960S!)

Many people heard of and saw Fort Lauderdale and Spring Break for the first time when they saw a film “Where The Boys Are” in 1960 and the title song sung by Connie Frances who at the time was one of the biggest American recording stars. In 2010 she came to Fort Lauderdale to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the movie appearing with 6 ‘hunks’ (who she didn’t know were gay!)

The movie, though mainly a comedy, was a look at the eternal mating games of young men and women with the former thinking they were using never tried before tricks though there was nothing new in their approaches though the latter knowingly fell for them.

Underlying the movie was a more serious story about date rape that seemed ahead of its time then but is still very relevant today.

The cast was made up of a young Hollywood with Connie Francis and Paula Prentiss making their film debuts and George Hamilton, Yvette Mimicux,  Jim Hutton, Frank Gorshin and Dolores Hart. (The latter would become a nun a few years later.)

The film was a big hit, as was the song, and I watch it once in awhile to see the old Fort Lauderdale that I remember. Ironically many scenes were filmed in one of the most famous gay hotel on the beach which is no longer in existence. I was living on Miami Beach back then and coming to Fort Lauderdale was like coming to the country!

The Gateway Theatre mentioned is the one I still go practically every week!

Here is a look at the 50th anniversary–she starts singing at 5:49 or see and hear her 50 years ago by looking at the film.

The film. (OMG! I was 24 back then!)

THE POINT FORT LAUDERDALE PART 1   1 comment

Folks up in the NorthEast please don’t hate us!

First I have to apologize as I forgot to put my finger over the audio when I wasn’t speaking! Okay now on to The Point!

The Point is at the east end of our residence property overlooking Karen Bay. It is the ‘backside’ of the pool and offers a place to sit, talk and relax. On the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve it is the place to see fireworks from Fort Lauderdale Beach, Pompano Beach, Hollywood Beach and downtown Fort Lauderdale. In May, when it happens, we can watch all the planes fly over for the plane and boat show.

We use to have a lot of parties there but for reasons unknown they don’t happen much anymore. A group of folks generally will come out around 4-5 PM, some bringing their dogs, and just have conversations about where they have been and what they have been doing.

I will go out at midnight just sit and look up at the sky with all the stars and the moon with clouds now and then passing overhead. It is about 5-6 blocks away from the city (in the video in the opening shot you may be able to see Sunrise Boulevard) but you feel as if you are in the country. Sitting here there is no way to feel any stress or anxieties.

Next I want to talk about the ‘senior citizen health group’ and the dog ‘park’ that isn‘t really there!

A NEW CAMERA AND A NEW VIDEO   1 comment

I had bought myself a new pocket digital camera last month and taking a walk on Sunday, January 18, 2015, I decided to test it out by making a new video.

There is a canal behind my building and across the way are million dollar+ homes–though the first one you see in the video doesn’t look it!

It was a perfect Sunday with a blue sky and a few wisps of clouds. The sun was shining bright, it was about 76-77 degrees with a light breeze.

I realized right away that I should have walked in the other direction–where the fancier homes were!–in order for my shadow not to show in the grass but I kept on going.

It is just a slice of my life in a minute and how good I live–not in a home worth a million+ dollars!

PS TODAY IS A NASTY, RAINY,W INDY DAY WITH ONLY A HIGH OF 69 DEGREES!

TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFE–FORT LAUDERDALE–RESTAURANT REVIEW   Leave a comment

Entering the Harbor Shops Shopping Plaza hang a left, turn right and about half way going south there is the Tropical Smoothie Cafe. It is a bright clean looking place and in spite of what you may read below the ladies behind the counter were very customer friendly. One was a trainee–that might have been Marie who’s name is on the receipt– who was being trained by a very smiling trainer.

We each had a coupon for a free flatbread and Allen ordered the Baja chicken and I had the chicken pesto. All flatbreads are $4.99. Smoothies come at 4 different prices from $4.72 to $5.66. I had the Blue Lagoon (blueberries, strawberries and bananas) while Allen had the Peaches ‘n Silk (peaches, strawberries and bananas) and both were cold and sm-o-o-o-o-o-th! In addition I ordered the turkey/bacon sandwich ($6.99) which I really didn’t need with the chicken flatbread.

The food, the service and the smoothies were fine and I really have nothing to complain about but I still prefer a full service place so chances are I wouldn’t return
The area caters to the cruise ship customers and crew plus tourists from the beach and Tropical Smoothie Cafe is a pleasant place to take a break from shopping, running around and the heat.

Without the coupons the check would have been $26.39 but in all probability without them I wouldn’t have had the flatbread so the check would have been $22.06 which is about average for lunch in this neighborhood.
