I have the craziest Christmas/Easter/ Leap Year cactus!! I don’t remember when I first bought the Christmas cactus plant  but probably 7-8 years ago. It was already in bloom when I bought it that Christmas but stopped blooming after the buds dropped. It didn’t bloom the following Christmas and then all of a sudden there were blooms around Easter. Once again it didn’t bloom at Christmas time but all of a sudden 2012 it started to bloom around my Leap Year birthday!

The last 3 years it seems to bloom around Christmas, the end of February and the week before Easter, whatever date it might be.

At first the blooms were all pink and then all a sudden they were a mixture of pink and white. I did cut off a few branches and before I knew it I had 5 pots of cacti plus the big mother plant.

For the first time this year the mother plant started to bloom 2 weeks before Christmas, both white and pink blooms, and one by one each of the other 5 potted plants started to bloom, some white and some pink. Since then all the plants have remained in bloom and I am wondering if this will continue to Easter and beyond!

The blooms are very pretty but I don’t detect any aroma.

From left to right: onion, romaine lettuce, turnips, beets–in another week I will chop up the ‘scallion’ part of the onion (started raising 2 weeks ago) and the Romaine leaves (started 20 days ago) julienne the turnip leaves and finely chop the beet leaves (planted March 29 but didn’t thin it out enough so the turnips and beets didn’t have the space to grow–next year I will do it differently!) mix them all together and toss them in a dressing of lime juice, garlic, apple vinegar and virgin olive oil and then eat my home grown salad .

I saw this outside a mom and pop restaurant and had to take a picture!

I generally have 5-7 blogs ready to write and/or post and someone asked what I will be writing about this week and the following is just a possibility:

The last 2 chapters of my “7 Decades series” and then I will start the writing, rewriting, editing, adding the X rated parts and a few things I have never told anyone.

Living well is the best revenge and there is no doubt I am living well!! I am and know I am a very lucky guy.

For those who may not know—where have you been?–at the beginning of March I bought packets of flower and veggie seeds at the Dollar Tree store–4 packets for a $1 and here we are on the 28th of April.

The marigolds are growing like crazy and in the rear on the left is a miniature sunflower–the rectangle flower pot in front of that are the beets but so far nothing has happened and I am not sure about pulling a couple of the leaves up– same things with the turnips which are in the round bowl in the center. Anybody have any idea as to when beets or turnips are ‘ready’? In any case I’ll give them a couple of more weeks and then pull a few out of both.

Meanwhile would anybody like some marigolds???

(First two important dates this week: I gave up drinking January 21 , 1981, and haven’t had a sip or taste—won’t eat anything cooked in alcohol–of any form of booze since then for 32 years–and on January 23 I will have lived in this apartment for 9 years–longest time I have lived in the same home!)

Anyone who knows me knows that I worship at the feet of Mother Nature and try to bring as much of her work into my place as I can. Wherever you look in my apartment you will see plants, most with flowers, EXCEPT in my bedroom! The reason for that is you can look as hard as you want but you will NOT see a bit of light in that room.

I sleep late in the morning–10 or 11 AM–(Hey, before you say anything, I go to sleep 2-4 AM) and can sleep through hurricanes, tornadoes, any kind of noise BUT a little bit of light and I am awake. When I moved into my current apartment January 23, 2004, the first thing I did was block my 3-4 windows (not sure as they have never been uncovered since that first day!) with heavy black double thick curtain and shower liners.

With the exception of that room no place is safe from plants and/or flowers where I live. In the picture above, the bottom section, the flower pot is on the bathroom window sill and the Cuban Butterfly along with the minature sun flower and mushrooms are flowering and it is January 20—winter!! So are the flowers in the top picture which are in the east window in the living room–Mother Nature is amazing and she is always surprising me!

One thing that South Florida has are hibiscus plants, bushes and trees and here at Gateway Terrace apartments there isn’t a corner you turn that you won’t be greeted by one of these flowers in many varied colors. They have no aroma and the flowers last only for a day but they add joy to the eye and to living here.

Oh yes, a single flower, red,  tucked behind the ear, is used to indicate the wearer’s availability for marriage–come on over we have plenty of red hibiscus.

Bill grows his garden between buildings R, S and T

Every day at any time various birds perch on top of the Avocado tree, from which we got 75+ avocados last year, and nibble on the top branches to the extent that they are getting barer  each day–are they eating the leaves or seeds? There are no nests that I can see just disappearing leaves!

FULL MOON MAY 5, 2012 & SPRING FLOWERS COMING UP   Leave a comment

This was the best I could do with my camera

Every Spring the Dollar Tree store have seed packets, usually 4 for a $1, potting soil, yes a bag for a dollar and various pots for a $1 each and saucers at the same price—surprise!!!! No?

In any case every Spring I hit the Dollar Tree and stock up on all the above and wait patiently for flowers to grow all around the apartment on all the sills. This is after a week to 10 days–will keep you updated as the days go by.
