THE POINT GOES TO THE DOGS!   2 comments

Someday I will figure out how to have a clear narrative without it sounding like a hurricane is taking place when I make a video!

In any case it being the day after Good Friday and the first evening of Passover and a day before Easter Sunday the Gateway Resident group had a Hot Dog day with real dogs invited!

Being Passover they also had matzos available for those who didn’t eat bread. I counted about 23 people (plus a couple ‘carried out’) and about 6 dogs. There was all the condiments you could want and chips.

It was a beautiful day, sunny, with temperatures in the low 80s, a breeze off Karen Bay. It did surprise me that there weren’t any boats out on the water or paddle boards riders.

Any wonder I keep on raving about where I live at Gateway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida??

THE POINT FORT LAUDERDALE PART 1   1 comment

Folks up in the NorthEast please don’t hate us!

First I have to apologize as I forgot to put my finger over the audio when I wasn’t speaking! Okay now on to The Point!

The Point is at the east end of our residence property overlooking Karen Bay. It is the ‘backside’ of the pool and offers a place to sit, talk and relax. On the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve it is the place to see fireworks from Fort Lauderdale Beach, Pompano Beach, Hollywood Beach and downtown Fort Lauderdale. In May, when it happens, we can watch all the planes fly over for the plane and boat show.

We use to have a lot of parties there but for reasons unknown they don’t happen much anymore. A group of folks generally will come out around 4-5 PM, some bringing their dogs, and just have conversations about where they have been and what they have been doing.

I will go out at midnight just sit and look up at the sky with all the stars and the moon with clouds now and then passing overhead. It is about 5-6 blocks away from the city (in the video in the opening shot you may be able to see Sunrise Boulevard) but you feel as if you are in the country. Sitting here there is no way to feel any stress or anxieties.

Next I want to talk about the ‘senior citizen health group’ and the dog ‘park’ that isn‘t really there!

A NEW CAMERA AND A NEW VIDEO   1 comment

I had bought myself a new pocket digital camera last month and taking a walk on Sunday, January 18, 2015, I decided to test it out by making a new video.

There is a canal behind my building and across the way are million dollar+ homes–though the first one you see in the video doesn’t look it!

It was a perfect Sunday with a blue sky and a few wisps of clouds. The sun was shining bright, it was about 76-77 degrees with a light breeze.

I realized right away that I should have walked in the other direction–where the fancier homes were!–in order for my shadow not to show in the grass but I kept on going.

It is just a slice of my life in a minute and how good I live–not in a home worth a million+ dollars!

PS TODAY IS A NASTY, RAINY,W INDY DAY WITH ONLY A HIGH OF 69 DEGREES!

A WEEK IN MY LIFE PART 9   Leave a comment

I LOVE THIS–AND YOU KNOW WHO I AM TALKING TO!

If I could wish anything for everybody it would be the equivalent of The Point! The Point is at the far east end of the Gateway Terrace apartments where I live with close to 300 other seniors. They range in age from 62 to 94 with a couple of younger people who, because of disabilities, live here.

The Point is located in Karen Bay on the inter-coastal which eventually flows into the Atlantic ocean. There is always a breeze so no matter how hot and/or humid the weather might be it is always comfortable sitting there. Our pool overlooks the bay and makes for many interesting sights. During the day the sun sparkles on the water with the wisp of clouds reflected in the blues, grays and greens of that water. At night you can see the moon and stars above and  in Karen Bay and the latter looks like jewels sparkling before you. Even in foul weather the view is breath taking with the clouds and water swirling, rising (sometimes too high) and then receding as if to say “The show is over!”

While sitting on a chair, basking in the sun, you can see paddlers going by, yachts of all sizes, catamarans, canoes, water jet propelled ‘flyers’ above or walking on the water. A kayak will pass by and a manatee or two or three on the way to their breeding grounds, going west, or going out for a feeding in the north part of the New River. You will see tourist lunch or dinner boats passing by or a motor boat towing a kid sitting in a rubber raft.

In the sky you will spot the Goodyear blimp or a small plane advertising a local business while jets of all sizes leave the airport and head out over the Atlantic ocean going in all directions to all countries, Islands or cities up north.

On July 4 you can see the fireworks from all the surrounding cities while during the air show the planes fly overhead giving us our own private show. All year long the boaters wave to us and we wave back, all with smiles! We meet our neighbors, sit and talk and meet the new people who become one of us very quickly.

At night when I go down there I can, at times, feel as if I am the only one in the world yet at the same time feel as if I am part of the universe I am surrounded by.

The Point is a perfect place and there are too few of those.

A WEEK IN MY WORLD   Leave a comment

At the age of 78 I have everything I want in life–well not a car with car insurance paid for a year but–a roof over my head–clothes on my back–food in my stomach– friends–sweets–Mother Nature–going to movies–reviewing Broadway theatre touring companies–writing reviews-loving thoughts coming my way 24/7–considering how I abused my body with food, booze, smoking and sex I have no complaints about my health even with the problems I do have.

A week of lunch one day at Cafe Vicoa movie on Los Olas–seeing “Chicago” at the Broward Performing Arts Center in Fort Lauderdale or “The Book of Mormon” at the Arsht Center in Miami–a snack at Subway-relaxing, talking to neighbors, getting sun and reading the paper at The Point, driving along the ocean , walking along the riverfront, a homemade ice cream cone at Kilwins, a sandwich and a slice of cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory, having fun shopping at the Dollar Tree Store and food shopping at Winn-Dixie–helping others when and how I can–sharing laughs and, sometimes, tears but always having company when wanted and/or needed and being alone if choosing to be.

I have had a fascinating up and down life and for the past decade an almost perfect. Now I am looking forward to my 20th Leap Year Birthday party with friends from all over celebrating with me.

In the first picture is a pillow made for me and in the second about ‘give me some chocolate’ is a sweat shirt I wear in the winter and get a lot of remarks for–it’s a good life folks!

BOATS OF GATEWAY   Leave a comment

The Point of the Gateway Terrace apartments juts into Karen Bay which allows all kinds of boats access to all the waterways of Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding areas up to and including the Atlantic ocean. There are 8 docks owned by Westminster which in turn runs the Gateway apartment properties. In and out od ‘season’ we have people from all over the world use the docks and become part of the Gateway family.

At any one time in Karen Bay there are boats anchored in the bay with flags from all nations flying from them. Whether it be sailboats, catamarans, small yachts or large ones along with ‘special’ dinner and lunch boats that cruise out along the inter-coastal there is a continuous change of scenery. In one day you can see all these boats plus kayaks, canoes, motor boats, paddlers, rubber rafts being towed with kids having a ball and being tossed around like one. There are the James Bonds type with their water jet paks walking on the water or flying over it.

Once in awhile, sitting on The Point, you might spot a school of manatees going by and back to their nesting area. And with Labor Day celebrations one can sit on The Point in the evening and watch the fireworks against the dark sky flaring over Fort Lauderdale Beach, Hollywood Beach, Pompano Beach along with those from downtown, all competing with the stars and a moon filling the sky.

Who would want to live anywhere else? Not me!!
