ODDS AND ENDS OF 2013 PART 3   Leave a comment

I was so excited! I came home to find a box at my front door and immediately thought it was the missing mysterious carrot cake!! I carried it in carefully, put it on the table, got a knife and started opening the 12X12X12 box. It was filled with bubble wrap as any cake company would be sure to pack a cake secure. Taking off the wrap imagine my face falling to the floor when instead of finding carrot cake I found a bpox filled with gauze bandages, non-stick tape, gauze bandage roll and jars of sterile saline!

AS it happened my primary and vascular surgeon doctors arranged for me to have home care with a nurse coming to change my bandage X amount times a week. The first time she arrived she didn’t have any supplies and asked me what the hospital sent me home with. After my initial surprise at her question because I had no idea what she was talking about she explained they, or my doctors, were suppose to give me the ‘cleaning’ supplies. After calls back and forth to her office, my doctor’s office and my insurance it was finally agreed that I would be sent what was needed but exactly when they couldn’t say.

I have no idea, and don’t really want to know, what this box of supplies costs, especially after all those reports about what a hospital charges for an aspirin!! I do know there are enough supplies for a couple of months at least. Then what happens with those that are left over? In any case with teh first visit by the nurse luckily I had the supplies she needed–not as many, not the exact size but enough to take care of the job. I must admit she didn’t carry back-up supplies ‘just in case’ but then I started to think of all the supplies she would ahve to carry and realized that it would be impossible.

The leson I learned about Santa Claus is that he doesn’t always bring what you want but what you need! (Santa, I do NEED that carrot cake!!!! Are you sure you didn’t eaty it???)

THE HERMATOMA, ABSCESS, CELLULITIES WEEK CONTINUED PART 2   Leave a comment

The appointment with the vascular surgeon was for 1:30 PM and I got to his office at 1 PM–he finally saw me at 2 PM. He said I was to get to the hospital immediately, that he would call ahead, which was the Memorial hospital which I had never heard of and it was on Sheridan street and University Drive–and I could have sworn he said it was 8 blocks away–it wasn’t.

I didn’t eat or drink anything all day as I didn’t know if they would have to take tests so I was hungry and thirsty! Looking for the hospital we passed a shopping center that had a Subway store so we stopped and each got the 2-6″ customer appreciation subs that cost $2 each. I had the meatball and the cold cuts subs–and we were on our way to look for the Memorial hospital almost passing it by. I know I hadn’t been in this neighborhood for at least 25 years and the hospitals I have been to like Broward General, Plantation and Holy Cross were all huge buildings taking up 2-4 city blocks and this one turned out to be in the back of a shopping center!

We went into what we thought was where you registered but the lady said we had to go to the Out Patient department so we did only to encounter 3 ladies dressed as Christmas trees!!!! They were really great, laughing it up, making us feel welcome and not just telling us where we had to go for me to register but taking us there.

The one thing I will say for all the people working there was that they are friendly and, without exception, did anything they could to help you. Though I never figured it out there were 3 different colored uniforms which indicated their status but if you wanted water or another pillow or anything you didn’t have to worry about asking the wrong.

I was put in the ER while waiting for a room to open up and they could take preliminary tests. One of the ladies there not only got me a book to read but said she would see what she could do about getting me a dinner for later on—she did. Stephan and Gary, nurses in the ER, did everything they could to make me comfortable–a trait I found all the employees to have.

It would be awhile before I was moved to 308W designating the west wing. The room was obviously set up for 2 patients but a bed was missing so I had a private room which was almost immediately ‘invaded’ by Cleopatra and I mean that in a good, nice way. She was bubbly, smiling, happy and no matter how sick you may be she had you smiling and laughing. Cleopatra was just one of an innumerable amount of people who tended to me including Julie, Anna, Steve, Jean, Alceda, Danielle, to name a few, and Eric who was in charge 2 nights I was there. It seems most of the crew worked 12 hours shifts anywhere from 2-4 days.

Saturday and Sunday went by in a whirlwind as I got a CT at midnight, an ultrasound twice plus that annoying blood pressure, temperature and pulse checks at all times of the day and night. Blood was taken and I was seen by 4-5 doctors from an infectious disease specialist to a cardiologist. I, also, saw my vascular surgeon who on Monday told me he was going to cut the leg open and drain at least 30% of the blood. Was it a blood clot? A hermatoma? Cellulitis or an abscess? I still didn’t know!

I kept on telling the vascular surgeon that I had to be discharged by Tuesday afternoon as I had to be in Miami to see and review the touring company of “We Will Rock You” and he said the operation would only take about 15 minutes, which he would do in the morning and I shouldn’t have any problem making the show. Well I didn’t make the show and for the first time in over 70 years I missed a performance of a show I was scheduled to see.

And from that point on everything went downhill including a 12 pound turkey that disappeared!

TEH BODY HEALTH REPORT PART 2   Leave a comment

(I DO WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR RESPONSE TO MY BLOG YESTERDAY INCLUDING ALL THE PERSONAL E-MAILS. i DO HAVE TO EXPLAIN SOMETHING–PLEASE FOLKS I AM NOT WORRIED–THAT ISN’T HOW I THINK–UNTIL I FIND OUT IN BLACK AND WHITE THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG AND WHAT CAN BE DONE, IF ANYTHING, ABOUT IT i’LL STICK TO MY VANITY AND WORK ON THE FLIP–NO LONGER CALLED A BRIDGE :o)–AND HOPE IT IS READY FOR ME TO EAT NEXT WEEK. PLEASE DON’T WORRY UNTIL I TELL YOU TO–i WON’T BE DYING FOR YEARS AND I WON’T BE CRYING FOR SYMPATHY THOUGH I REALIZE THAT SOME PEOPLE CAN ONLY DO THAT AS IT IS THE ONLY WAY THEY KNOW HOW TO ACT!)

******************************************************************

About 2 months ago I woke up to a big lump in my neck on the right side while the one on the left was a little swollen–I took some amoxicillin for a few days and the lump went down but still was obvious on both sides, they hurt only when I touched them–I called my doctor and went to see him at the end of May–2 weeks later I went for a cat scan and then last Wednesday for a contrast cat scan.

Of course I did a stupid thing and googled swollen neck and a few other things–seems the choices were dental infection (sounded reasonable with all the problems I have been having with my teeth lately) or throat infection or cancer–now I ask you what do you think I zeroed in on???? Right!

Due to it being July 3rd I knew my doc wouldn’t get the results until Monday–meanwhile I have that whole dental thing going. Not hearing from him today I called him and the receptionist told me he didn’t get the report–he called me an hour ago and gave me the results.

All I got out of it was that I may have hypothyroidism and I immediately responded to him “That’s why I have been having trouble with my weight!” and he said, “I didn’t say that.” I think I will fire him–anyway following are some of the things I remembered:

I need to have 2 MRIs done—1 regular and 1 contrasting–plus an ultra sound. I can handle the latter but (since the aorta valve operation for some reason I have been extremely claustrophobic) no way I can handle the MRIs –I even bolted from a stand up one–he said I should take 2 milligrams of Lorazapam the day I have them and they should work.

He also mentioned a growth on/in(?) a vein in my brain–along with something about the carotid artery and a bulb–then he threw in the thyroid bit–there were a couple of other things he mentioned and I told him to talk English, not medicalnese !

The MRIs have been set for Thursday, July 18–I didn’t realize until I got home that it is the same day as I have to be at the dentist but it will all work out at the MRIs (if I can do them LOL) are at 12:15 and the dentist is at 3 PM–might even have time to get a bite at Cafe Vico!! (Always thinking, always thinking.)

He didn’t sound too concerned or too rushed about the whole thing which made me feel a little better plus he said nothing about cancer though I don’t think he would over the phone or in any case I got the feeling he wouldn’t say anything until he gets the results.

Okay, since my thyroid might be the reason of my weight gain (my conclusion, not his) and since my bridge isn’t fixed I guess I will just have to have some smooth ice cream–no butter almond or rocky road or anything that I might ‘crunch’ into.

Good news or bad news, preferably  the former, I will let you know in about a week or so–plus hopefully the whole bridge thing will be straightened out.

Just wanted to let you know what was happening.

By the way we did go to Cafe Vico today–Allen had the lasagna and loved it–I had the angel hair pasta with marinara sauce and was able to eat it without any problem and it was good–I wasn’t able to eat the Italian bread dipped in their great garlic and oil with spices mix–hopefully next week!

ALL I AM LOOKING FOR IS A LITTLE SYMPATHY–AND I’M GETTIGN VERY LITTLE!   Leave a comment

HEY, I’M LOOKING FOR A LITTLE SYMPATHY HERE–AND I’M GETTING VERY LITTLE!

I scratched my arm two days ago and because of taking blood thinner (coumindin) it really gets messy and takes awhile to repair–problem is I am having with results of home test–last time that happened I had to go to the hospital–so I made an appointment with my primary for Thursday to get it tested there and to see if eating grapes, taking extra doses of Vitamin D, calcium and C play a PM non-aspirin for the pain in my feet, are affecting the PT count.

But before that I noticed a black circle–mole like–on my left leg which seemed to come out of nowhere–immediately called the dermatologist and went up there yesterday–he took a biopsy and said he would have the results in 2 weeks

Then to add injury to insult I got a paper cut on my index finger yesterday and it is red and sore today as if infected.

Did I forget to mention that I woke up Saturday and my right ear seemed block? Tried a few of the drugstore remedies plus some peroxide–nothing–still blocked up (And where did all that gray hair come from? I use to have it sprayed in to make me look older, more distinguished not it just makes me look old!)

Oh well I wasn’t going to the doctors until next year so, hopefully, my primary can take care of everything tomorrow–meanwhile can I get some sympathy?????

It’s Thursday evening and it all seems to be falling into place. My primary doctor gave me a prescription for an ear infection, told me to leave the arm unbandged and that I’ll just have to put up with the paper cut, which he said hurts more than if I got stabbed–Thanks Doc! Now I just have to wait for the dermatologist’s report on the biopsy which really doesn’t bother me–now!

I spoke to my doctor and all the wild rumors being passed around by the Republicans–he said as far as he is concerned, regarding me as a patient, nothing–and he spelled out nothing–will change. He said I will be treated as fast as I have been in the present and with the same care and concern. Why wouldn’t I trust this man who has seen me through a congestive heart attack, an aorta valve replacement and every ailment I have had since (he thinks) I’ve turned old! He, also, happens to be a Republican!!

Went for lunch at the Sea Watch after–on the beach–report on Saturday!
